Birthday Cupcakes- First Official Order!

24 Jul

July 24th, 2011

This weekend I had my first official order of cupcakes! My friend’s friend ordered birthday cupcakes for his aunt and chose three flavors- red velvet, green velvet, and lemon. I was a little nervous because I wanted to put my best foot forward and make the cupcakes as perfect as possible…after all, I didn’t want to disappoint my first customer.

Thanks Anthony, for the referral!

R+K’s Baby Shower

17 Jul

July 17th, 2011

My friends Rey and Kate had their baby shower this past weekend and I was super excited when they asked me to make cupcakes for their event. I found cute little onsies and baby bottle cutters and decided to use them as the theme.  They are expecting a girl, so I went with a girl color scheme for the fondant toppers and made red velvet, chocolate, and peppermint chocolate cupcakes.

Rey is also a big fan of Spiderman, so as an extra, I made Spiderman cake pops with a lemon flavored cake. I was worried that the pops didn’t look like Spiderman, but most people were able to recognize and relate them to the actual character. What do you think?

Flirty 30 Birthday Cupcakes

12 Jun

June 12th, 2011

This past week was a busy baking week. I made about 80 cupcakes for a few requests, one of which included my friend Vicky’s flirty 30 birthday.  She had a birthday celebration on Saturday and upon her request, I made red velvet and threw in a few other flavors. I hope she was able to enjoy the cupcakes, as she was busy entertaining guests and enjoying the party.

Classic Red Velvet

When the red velvet craze first started, I wasn’t that much of a fan because I thought it was just white cake dyed with red food coloring. In fact, a few of the main ingredients include buttermilk, cocoa powder, red food coloring, and cream cheese frosting.  As I started seeing them in bakeries they eventually grew on me. Plus, I’m a fan of cream cheese frosting. Today, red velvet cupcakes are one of my favorite flavors to bake.

A while ago, I discovered savory red velvet fried chicken at American Cupcake.  Interesting combo and I had to try it. It was boneless chicken covered in a bright red velvet batter, fried to crispiness that left a hint of sweetness. If you are a big red velvet fan and/or love fried chicken, you should check it out.

Red velvet cupcakes will suffice until the day I attempt to make red velvet fried chicken.

Tangy Lemon Cupcakes

May 28th, 2011

My sister gave me a bunch of lemons and I forgot about them until I saw them sitting in the fridge. I was meaning to use them sooner, and even found a lemon tart recipe. But the tart recipe looked like it would be a few days worth of process, and I needed something quick to make for a friend’s get together, so I opted for lemon cupcakes instead.

Since I love using fresh ingredients, I decided to use fresh lemon juice and add it to the batter. Not knowing whether or not others would like the tanginess, I was a little cautious with how much lemon juice I was adding. I’m a fan, so if I was making the cupcakes to devour all by myself I would have easily used the juice from two whole lemons! On top of that, I spiced up plain butter cream with a few drops of lemon juice and fresh lemon zest.

These are by far one of my favorite cupcakes. I’ll be tempted to make them again, but I’m also itching to make that lemon tart. Stay tuned…

The Best Things in Life Are Chocolate

22 May

May 22nd, 2011

I met up with my friend this weekend, who is a talented freelance makeup artist, to do my makeup for an event.  I wanted to give her something in exchange and decided to make some decadent chocolate cupcakes.

The original plan was to only frost the cupcakes with a chocolate buttercream frosting.  However, I got a little chocolate crazy and decided to fill the cupcakes with milk chocolate ganache that I had left over.  A little too much chocolate?…That was my first thought, but one can never have too much chocolate!

So chocolatey
